Watch out for these five dangerous roads in the Omaha metro area

On Behalf of | Jan 12, 2024 | Personal Injury

Omaha, Nebraska is a city known for its vibrant culture, rich history, and, unfortunately, some rather notorious stretches of road. As we navigate the bustling streets and quiet neighborhoods, it is crucial to spotlight the roadways that demand our utmost attention. Whether you are a daily commuter, a weekend road-tripper, or just planning your next visit, understanding these hazardous byways is an important step to making every trip a safe one.

So, buckle up, and let’s delve into the twists, turns, and tales of Omaha’s most dangerous drives.

How common are car accidents in Nebraska?

The Nebraska Department of Transportation reports that there were more than 29,000 car accidents in 2020. These included 217 fatal accidents and more than 9,000 with injuries to drivers, passengers, or pedestrians. Not surprisingly, more than 30% of these accidents occurred in Omaha.

How can I reduce the risk of a serious car accident?

In addition to following traffic rules like driving within the speed limit and adjusting driving style for inclement weather, it can help to avoid some of the more dangerous areas of the city. Five roads and intersection that tend to experience a higher-than-average rate of accidents in Omaha include the following:

  • Intersection of Industrial Drive, Millard Avenue, L Street, and 132nd Street. This is the seventh busiest interchange in Omaha but has received the award for “worst crossroad in America” from Streets Blog USA and “most dangerous intersection for pedestrians” from Time magazine. Not the type of awards we want to win.
  • Dodge Street: This major thoroughfare often experiences heavy traffic, especially during rush hours, which can lead to accidents. The intersection at 72nd is particularly busy with substantial traffic flow increasing the likelihood of accidents.
  • Interstate 80 (I-80): Portions of this interstate that pass-through Omaha can be prone to accidents due to high-speed traffic and heavy trucking routes.
  • West Center Road: Another main road with high traffic volume and potential for accidents, particularly in certain sections during peak hours.
  • I-480 and I-80 Interchange: Like many interchanges, this area can experience congestion and higher accident rates, especially during times of increased traffic flow.

Unfortunately, even when we take steps to reduce the risk of a crash accidents can still happen. Those who believe the accident was the result of another driver’s careless or reckless driving can likely hold that driver accountable for the costs associated with the accident.
